Tribute to Miss Elizabeth - A Creature's Perspective

May 3 2003

Many wrestling fans was shocked to hear about the death of Miss Elizabeth. This column is not going to go into how she died. Many other reports will cover that. We are not even going to go into why she died. That is for another time. From a Creature's perspective, it is the sadness and the emptiness, one feels that she is no longer among us.

She had not graced the WWE in a long time. It does not matter. She had made her mark as the first diva, the first non-wrestling woman to really make an impact on the fans. She was a woman that the female fans could identify with. She stood behind her man. She was loyal, steadfast, and loved him ... no matter what.

We attended her wedding after all. We felt like we knew her. Her doe eyes were so emotive, that the female fans wanted to cry when she did, and wanted to worry when she started to worry. No matter what went on in the ring, she always remained a class act, and always acted like a lady. She never tried to outdo Sheri Martel or Wendy Richter or Moolah. She knew her role, and played it to perfection.

For the Xreatures though, there is another memory of Elizabeth that will haunt us.

While the other wrestling fans may have forgotten, Elizabeth played an important part in the unveiling of the Undertaker character. It was the saving of Elizabeth during a match between Hogan and Macho Man that started the evolution of the Undertaker from a total enigma, the zombie Taker if you will, into a character that could have feelings. Interfering in the match for the sole purpose of saving Elizabeth from harm, marked the evolution of turning the Taker into a more human character - with at least a touch of ethics and morals. A character that just might know right from wrong.

Previously, the Undertaker seemed to only work under the baton (or urn) of Paul Bearer and only for his own reasons. The character was dark and quite enigmatic. Children were scared, women were intrigued. The absolute lack of interest in the opposite sex made him all the more sexy. At that point, he came out to save Miss Elizabeth, not for his own gain, or his own sexual pursuit, but because it was the right thing to do. This moved the character solidly into his tweener role which he has been in for over a decade. Further, it was this one action that started his move into becoming the conscience of the WWF/WWE.

Some may read this and simply not care. Some will read this and understand. In later storylines, he was able to chokeslam both Chyna, Stephanie and Sable, and at the time it was deserving. Yet it was the innocent and blameless Miss Elizabeth, the ultimate damsel in distress, who he went to save from impending doom. Without Miss Elizabeth, the character could not have gained that much depth at that time. Without Miss Elizabeth, the Creatures would not have appreciated it so much. The women admired Miss Elizabeth, she was not a threat. For the men, Miss Elizabeth would be the perfect date, the ultimate partner. She was the first lady of wrestling and an icon in her own right.

She will be missed, but she will always be remembered.

Later,
Lorddess
