Meeting the Undertaker
By Sonia
On Saturday March 8th, 2003, God blessed me with yet ANOTHER awesome
wrestling moment :-) And since I don't really have any friends who love
wrestling the way I do, you unfortunate readers are the ones who have to
read about it .
I attended the Undertaker autograph signing/appearance at the Allstate
Arena
box office in Rosemont, IL. The line was HUGE...from the BO door all the
way
to Mannheim Road, and if you ask anyone familiar with the area, they'll
tell
you that's FAR! But my brother and I arrived at 8 a.m. for the 11:30 a.m.
signing so we were lucky to be near the front of the line.
Because of the enormous amount of people and the fact Undertaker wanted
everyone to walk away with an autograph (according to the Radio DJ who
was
there promoting the event for his station), things moved awful fast. It
amazes me how, as a fan, I'll wait HOURS for just SECONDS worth of
gratification. And later, while it's easy to remember those passing hours,
I
STRUGGLE to remember the precious seconds that are the pay off! I'm getting
old!
Back to the signing...Taker was being just as sweet as can be. He asked,
"How are you?" or "How's it going?" to everyone who approached him. Only
drawback to this signing was people had to provide their own item to be
signed. Many fans had more than one, but quite a few also had nothing since
they were under the impression photos would be sold/provided, so that had
to
suck for them. There was a girl and her fiancee, her little sister, and
her
dad (I assume) in front of me and they had nothing, so I gave them the
Table
of Contents out of my UNDERTAKER tribute magazine. Hope it helped.
Anyways, I'm a 12-13 year fan of Taker. He's the man responsible for me
loving pro-wrestling the way I do, and that's influenced my life immensely,
so I wrote some stuff in a Thank You card and brought it for him. As I
got
up to the table, I put my promo photo down along with the yellow envelope
the card was in. He said his greeting statement to me, and I smiled (I'm
still smiling like a fool!). I then slid the card across to him as I said,
"This is for you." He grabbed it and read the front as he replied, "Oh!
Thank you very much," then put the card at his feet. I wonder if he'll
ever
really read it?? He then looked at me again, and before he started signing,
I asked, "May I shake your hand?" He put down his marker, looked me right
in
the eye, and did me the favor of shaking my hand It was awesome! He then
signed my photo as I slid to the side to make room for the next lucky fan,
and said, "Thank you" with a HUGE grin on my face :-D as he handed it to
me
and said, "You're welcome."
It was one of the fastest experiences of my life, but also one of THE
COOLEST! My Dad, awesome dude that he is, also managed to snap 3 pics of
Taker while my bro and I were in line. After how incredibly generous and
accomodating Stone Cold Steve Austin was 2 weeks ago, I couldn't have asked
for a better follow up, especially since I've looked up to Taker for
inspiration for so long! Taker rules!
